Cloudy Bay Winery will celebrate its 40th anniversary on February 28 with the launch of its Cloudy Bay 40th vintage Sauvignon Blanc and a three day event for 40 international trade guests.

Since its foundation in 1985, Cloudy Bay has built a legacy of producing world-class wines that have garnered international acclaim and defined the Marlborough region as a global wine destination.

From the first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc that captured the attention of wine enthusiasts around the world, to its diverse portfolio of award-winning wines today, Cloudy Bay has continually set the benchmark for quality, innovation, and sustainability in the industry.

As the winery marks four decades of excellence, the team is reflecting on the remarkable journey that has shaped its identity and elevated New Zealand’s reputation in the world of wine.

Humble Beginnings

“To reach 40 years is a significant milestone for Cloudy Bay, and we are incredibly proud of everything our team has achieved over the years,” says Kat Mason, Wine Communications Manager at Cloudy Bay Vineyards.

“From humble beginnings when winemakers David Hohnen and Kevin Judd first launched Cloudy Bay in 1985, to growing to become a recognised leader in premium winemaking, with international distribution, our success is testament to the passion and dedication of everyone who has been a part of our journey.”

Marlborough & Central Otago

With vineyards in both Marlborough and Central Otago, Cloudy Bay continues to craft wines that balance elegance and power. A deep commitment to sustainability drives every step, ensuring that the land, local communities, and seasonal workers are cared for as the winery continues to evolve.

Cloudy Bay was a pioneer in bringing Sauvignon Blanc to the global stage, offering wines that are synonymous with purity, vibrancy, and a true expression of the region’s unique terroir. Over the years, the winery has expanded its portfolio to include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pelorus méthode traditionnelle – each bottle a testament to the unique landscapes that shape them.

The company says it is only fitting for the release of a Cloudy Bay 40th vintage Sauvignon Blanc to commemorate the occasion. The release is a true expression of the 2024 growing season, which was marked by the driest conditions on record, with a drought declared in March. The challenging weather, including early spring frost and a dry summer, led to lower yields but allowed the vineyard team to focus on quality through meticulous care and regular irrigation.

Alongside the release of the Cloudy Bay 40th vintage Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay will also welcome 40 international trade guests from its global markets to its brand home in Marlborough. The guests will experience a multi-day educational and immersion experience, culminating in a 40th birthday party on site on February 28.

Estate Director

Yang Chen, Estate Director at Cloudy Bay, expressed his excitement for the occasion, saying, “Celebrating 40 years of Cloudy Bay is an incredibly special milestone, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to mark this momentous occasion. We look forward to welcoming our guests from around the world to our Marlborough home for three unforgettable days, immersed in exceptional wine, world-class cuisine, and awe-inspiring landscapes. It will truly be a birthday celebration like no other.”

Nikolai St George, Wine Director at Cloudy Bay, says, “Reaching the 40th vintage of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is a truly remarkable achievement. This wine has been instrumental in shaping both Cloudy Bay and the Marlborough region’s global reputation. It’s a celebration of four decades of passion, innovation, and commitment, and we’re thrilled to share this exceptional vintage with our guests as we look toward the future.”

Cloudy Bay’s Sauvignon Blanc is considered a wine that has not only shaped the brand but has played a significant role in defining Marlborough as a world-renowned wine region.
