As Wellington’s hospitality scene continues to face significant challenges, an iconic Te Aro coffee destination has bucked the closure trend with a bold reopening investment.

With over 50 venues having closed between Courtenay Place and Lambton Quay in 2024 alone, Havana Coffee Works says it is bringing some confidence to the sector by reopening the doors of Havana Lounge, which has resided on Tory Street, Te Aro for over 10 years.

The much-loved community café now operates as a comprehensive coffee destination where customers can enjoy exceptional coffee and food while purchasing premium coffee beans, brewing equipment, and machinery all under one roof.

Community Loyalty

Stefan Gray, General Manager, Havana Coffee Works says Havana Coffee Works has chosen to invest in and expand its café operation, and believes the role that hospitality venues play in community life is more important than ever.

“We’ve had so many people asking when we’d reopen the Lounge. Despite the tough climate, we saw an opportunity to create something even better – a place where you can grab your morning flat white, pick up beans for home, and maybe discover some new brew gear all in one visit.

“Our loyal regulars have been part of the Havana family for years, and we’ve even had people travel from across the country just to experience the Havana atmosphere and our range of blends and single origins in their original home”

“The space embodies Havana’s philosophy of inclusiveness, authenticity, and breaking free from the everyday.”

“At a time when Wellington witnessed the closure of so many iconic venues including Pandoro bakery, Egmont Street Eatery, and numerous Courtenay Place establishments, we made a deliberate investment in not just maintaining but enhancing our café operation.”

Despite some within the industry describing current trading conditions as “worse than during Covid” and “near impossible” to turn a profit, Havana is optimistic and delighted to be welcoming back the Te Aro community that has long considered it an essential part of their daily routine.

Havana Lounge on Tory Street, Wellington is now open Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm.
