China’s tourism sector is booming, but the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is stepping in to tackle tourism behaviors tarnishing travel experiences. An online vote, conducted from April to June 2025 by the Tourism Quality Supervision and Management Institute, revealed the “Top Ten Uncivilized Tourism Behaviors,” based on over 17,000 votes. This initiative seeks to curb bad behavior and nurture a generally civilized tourism environment, supporting high-quality industry development.
The survey presented fifteen common issues and sought public input, resulting in the following list of top problems, ranked by votes:
1/ Smoking in Non-Smoking Areas: Smoking in places like scenic spots led the list, disregarding rules.
2/ Graffiti on Scenic Buildings: Vandalizing sites with carvings defaces beauty.
3/ Littering or Abandoning Garbage While Camping: Discarding waste harms the environment.
4/ Talking Loudly During Shows: Loud chatter annoys visitors.
5/ Loud Mobile Phone Sounds on Transport: Noise on trains disturbs passengers.
6/ Queue-Jumping: Cutting in line at attractions frustrates others.
7/ Removing Shoes in Confined Spaces: Taking off shoes on rail cars creates discomfort.
8/ Using Flash Photography Where Prohibited: Flashing cameras at relics risks damage.
9/ Lying Down in Public Areas: Sprawling across benches disrupts public spaces.
10/ Fighting for Food at Buffets: Aggressive behavior at dining areas is uncivilized.
Netizens also called attention to more issues, such as illegal animal feeding, kids running uncontrolled on trains, constant honking in traffic, damage to meadow vegetation, and blocking train doors.
While millions travel annually in China, uncivilized behaviors are increasingly evident. These disrupt order, harm the social environment, and even threaten the tourism industry. Garnering online engagement, the voting campaign is a public warning, exposing behavior that degrades spaces and sites.
This initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage resistance to rude behavior, generally speaking. Acting as a warning, the campaign urges tourists to adopt practices that are respectful, in most cases. The goal is to create a harmonious and orderly tourism experience for everyone.
Maintaining its reputation as a top global destination is critical as China continues to welcome travelers. Public participation in the survey indicates commitment to civility, ensuring treasures stay vibrant for generations.
