WeLoveHolidays recently conducted a representative survey among 2,000 German travelers to get a feel for how Germans are planning their travels and saving up for 2025. It turns out travel still takes center stage—generally speaking, only about 7% are thinking of slashing their vacation costs, while nearly one in three (around 31%, if you can believe it) are actually gearing up to travel even more. In fact, roughly 21% are planning longer or more frequent trips, and another 10% are ready to pump up their travel budgets for a bit of luxury.
How Much do German Travelers Spend on Vacation?
Keeping to a travel budget is often trickier than it sounds. More than half—56% by the count—admitted to spending more than originally planned in 2024, with one in ten (11%) even doubling what they’d set aside. On the flip side, only about 12% managed to keep their expenses under control. This suggests that for many Germans, a holiday is the perfect excuse to treat themselves, even if it means stretching the budget.
Even so, most folks start out with a clear plan. German travelers mentioned an average of 43 euros per day when asked about their daily spending. The numbers are a bit all over the place: 17% settled on a range of 40–60 euros, 15% leaned toward 80–100 euros, and 14% picked 20–40 euros. Interestingly, 18% planned days costing 100 euros or more, while a mere 10% said they’d travel without any budget limit at all.
What Is the Holiday Budget Spent on?
Experiences rule now more than before—especially when it comes to eating and enjoying life. More than a third (36%) are all about splurging on nicer restaurants and drinks, and roughly one in five (20%) won’t pass up a fancy spa day. Beyond just winding down, about 11% opt for exclusive VIP tours or other special outings, while another 10% dive into adventure activities like skiing, diving, or climbing. And yes, souvenirs still have their place, with 10% marking them as a must-have.
The Most Popular Savings Tips for 2025
Even with prices climbing, Germans are still finding clever ways to save without giving up on fun. In most cases, four strategies seem to be winning: folks are choosing to travel off-peak (26% say so) to snag lower prices and dodge the crowds; 23% book their trips early to lock in the best deals; roughly 13% stay flexible with their dates to find cheaper flights and hotel rates; and about 11% pick their destination based on getting the best bang for their buck instead of sticking to one specific country.
