Hospitality job opportunities have jumped 15 percent in the past year, signalling renewed confidence across the sector and wider economy, according to Kiwi-owned job seeker platform ZEIL. The industry is among the fastest-growing heading into summer.

Caitlin Langlands, ZEIL Marketing Manager, says the surge reflects a turning point. “We’re starting to see genuine momentum return to hospitality. Employers are hiring again, new venues are opening, and there’s more movement in the job market. It’s a sign the sector and the economy are finding their feet.”

Hospitality New Zealand Head of Communications Sam MacKinnon adds: “The rise in job opportunities signals people are confident about strong trade returning, and that confidence flows through to communities and local economies.”

The recovery is nationwide, with regional operators reporting stronger trading conditions and higher demand for skilled staff. After years of staff shortages and financial pressure, businesses are now rebuilding teams and planning for growth rather than survival.

Cautiously Optimistic

Restaurant Association of New Zealand CEO Marisa Bidois describes the picture as cautiously optimistic:

“Anecdotal feedback from our members suggests they are not feeling the same level of recruitment pressure as in previous years, largely because the customer downturn has meant they haven’t needed to hire at the same scale. However, we are definitely seeing green shoots. A recent member survey on recruitment challenges shows sentiment is improving with 38 per cent of businesses reporting recruitment conditions have eased in the three months to September.

“While 68 per cent say they are currently fully staffed, recruitment challenges remain. Three quarters of businesses recruiting for mid to senior roles told us it was difficult or extremely difficult to find suitable candidates, and that challenge also extends to junior roles. So while there is cautious optimism, hiring remains a pressure point, particularly where specialist skills and experience are required.

“We know summer is traditionally a time when hospitality businesses ramp up hiring, and we’re seeing businesses begin that planning.”

Rebound Reflects Resilience

ZEIL and Hospitality New Zealand say the rebound reflects the resilience of an industry that employs tens of thousands of New Zealanders and provides vital social connection. While cost pressures and visa delays remain, the latest data suggests hospitality is on a firmer footing heading into the busy summer season.
