Remembering our trials and tribulations are all part of the ANZAC spirit!
A heart warming example of hospitality and resilience emerged during the 2024 Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli.
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) band faced a significant challenge when their instruments and uniforms were lost due to floods in Dubai. Despite this setback, the band members demonstrated remarkable adaptability.
The drummer practiced using spoons, and vocalist Lance Corporal Bryony Williams prepared to perform without accompaniment. The Australian Defence Force stepped in to assist, providing a guitar and a bugler to support the NZDF’s Māori cultural group. This collaboration ensured that the dawn service proceeded with dignity, highlighting the enduring spirit of ANZAC solidarity and the commitment of both nations to honour our shared history.
And just in case you need a good, sturdy, ANZAC biscuit recipe, here it is:-
ANZAC Biscuits
Yield: 36 x 40 g biscuits (with dried fruit)
110 g (1 cup) rolled oats
150 g (1 cup) plain flour 120 g (⅔ cup) brown sugar
70 g (⅔ cup) desiccated coconut
- Combine all dry ingredients 125 grams butter
2 tablespoons golden syrup
- Melt butter and golden syrup 2 tablespoons water
½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- Dissolve baking soda in water
- Combine 3 with 2, then add to 1
- Combine ingredients evenly
- Mould 40 g discs. Bake 160C 14 min
The moulded shape of the biscuit should be a little larger than an old 50 cent piece. ANZAC soldiers liked this shape. They stuffed biscuits in their pockets for snacks on the run.
