Earth Day is a time to reflect, appreciate, and give back to the incredible natural resources that make northern Michigan so special. From the crystal-clear lakes and winding rivers to scenic trails and majestic woodlands, nature is at the heart of everything we love about this region.
It’s not just about enjoying the outdoors but also about protecting it. That includes doing our part to care for our Great Lakes, keep our waters pristine, and preserve cherished places like the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for generations to come.Â
Here are THREE reasons why we celebrate Earth Day and how you can join in on making a difference:
Scenic Trails
There’s nothing quite like the fresh northern Michigan air as you wander — or ride — through our region’s vast network of scenic trails. With hundreds of miles to explore, every day can be a new adventure. Whether you’re weaving through charming villages, cruising along paved paths, or kicking up dust on gravel routes, one thing’s for sure: the views are always worth it.
Conservation Tip: Plan ahead, stay on marked trails, and be mindful of local wildlife—you’re the visitor in their backyard.
Water
Whether you’re swimming, paddling, diving, or simply gazing from the shoreline, northern Michigan’s waters are nothing short of magical. From the sparkling waves of Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay to the hidden gems of inland lakes, there’s no shortage of places to make a splash or just soak in the view. Stroll the shoreline, sink your toes into the sand, and don’t leave before catching one of our iconic Pure Michigan sunsets lighting up the horizon.
Conservation Tip: Keep our waters pristine, pack out what you pack in, and always make sure your trash lands in the bin, not on the beach or in the lake.Â
Agriculture
Cherries, apples, and grapes—oh my! And that’s just the beginning of what northern Michigan’s rich agricultural landscape has to offer.
Thanks to the climate-buffering effects of Lake Michigan, the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas are home to rolling vineyards that produce the award-winning wines of the Traverse Wine Coast. But beyond the grapes, the countryside is bursting with life, cherry orchards, apple trees, flower fields, and roadside farm stands overflowing with just-picked produce.
Want to get even closer to the action? Spend a few hours at a local U-pick farm and experience the joy of harvesting your seasonal favorites.
Conservation Tip: Stick to marked areas, follow farm guidelines, and always treat the crops and farmers with care and respect.
